A BRIEF HISTORY OF SEAFORD RESIDENTS' ASSOCIATION

The Association was founded by some twelve citizens who met in the Belmont café (now the site of Forbouys newsagents) in Broad Street, Seaford, in May 1959. A certain Mr. Flook was the first chairman.

The major cause for concern was the state of the sea defences which had been breached causing flooding as far as lower Church Street.

The first newsletter was published as a report of the inaugral meeting and it has developed into a thrice yearly publication covering some twelve or so pages. The 100th issue was published in the Autumn of 1991. By the mid 1960s the Association was a robust organisation serving the town whose population had risen to about 15,000 people. The annual subscription then was 4/- (four shillings) per couple - that's 20 pence! In 1969 the Association was granted the right to use the Town's Coat of Arms (shown top left).

After the demise of the Seaford Urban District Council in 1974, The Association became an even more significant voice, seeking to protect and promote the interests of Seaford. Until mid-1997 the Association worked with a separate residents' association that covered the eastern end Seaford. The dissolution of the Chyngton Residents' Association, with many of its members joining the Seaford Residents' Association, meant that the Association was able to speak with an even stronger voice for the Seaford community.

Membership grew steadily but changes in the way subscriptions have had to be collected have caused a reduction in membership which now stands at about 1200 households. The annual subscription is just £2.50 and represents excellent value for money. Association costs are kept low because of the number of active members who contribute their time and effort freely.
